About Aotearoa:
Aotearoa is the common Māori word for New Zealand, often translated as "the land of the large white cloud". If you look it up at the Māori dictionary you will find it being the term for the North Island only, while you also can find additional interpretations of the name at Wikipedia.
Since it is commonly used we will leave it up to other people to discuss about it.
